Josef Albers was born on March 19, 1888 in Bottrop, Westphalia, Germany, the only child of Lorenz Albers, a housepainter, and Magdelena (Schumacher) Albers. He attended the Präparanden-Schule in Langenhorst from 1902 to 1905 and then the teachers college in Büren, graduating in 1908. He became an instructor in several Westphalian primary schools. Born in Norwalk, California, Asawa is known for her wire sculpture, public commissions, and activism in education and the arts. In 1945, she attended Black Mountain College, where she was taught by Josef Albers, Buckminster Fuller, and Merce Cunningham, through whom she met David Tudor. Imogen Cunningham (1883-1976) was an American photographer known for her early work in botanical imagery and nudes. During the 1930's, Cunningham explored the industrial and architectural forms of oil refineries, lumber mills, and shipyards. During the 1940's, her focus shifted to documentary street photography.
